Nowadays, with the progress of science and technology, information communication is becoming more and more rapid, so many people find themselves able to know the life in distant places anytime and anywhere. This also let many people know a lot of amazing cultural culture and beautiful scenery, the reason why human beings on the earth is very small, because there are many different cultural customs in different regions. It is these customs and cultures that make the whole earth so colorful that people are willing to visit places they have never been to before. After all, reading thousands of books is still not as impressive as going to the place you want to go and seeing it for yourself. Besides, people now have more convenient conditions and can have the opportunity to go to the place they are interested in.
There is one really weird place in the world. It is cut off from the rest of the world. Almost no outsiders live here for long periods of time. This island in the Aegean Sea is very small, only 360 square kilometers, and has fewer than twenty thousand permanent residents, nearly a thousand of whom are monks. This is a very religious place. For thousands of years, no women were allowed on the island, so that monks here could focus on religion and not be tempted by the outside world.
There are hardly any female creatures here, except hens, because the people here need to eat eggs for nutrition, and all the food is too wasteful to buy from outside, and the quality of the supply is not very stable, and will be affected by some external factors. So, in order to be able to settle down and practice without too much interference from the outside world, people here would make an exception to allow the existence of hens. It is such a special regulation, so many people are curious about it, want to go to visit. Visitors describe a lack of any entertainment facilities, not even televisions or Musical Instruments, which are explicitly banned, even for visitors who are not allowed to bring mobile phones in.
Moreover, visitors are not allowed to stay overnight and must leave every morning into the afternoon without any exceptions. So, even now, it’s still very mysterious. Most of the buildings here are the monasteries, where women have not been seen since 1060, and where people live ascetic lives.
The island’s monks are Orthodox Christians from Eastern Europe, and it has long been a religious mecca, a gathering place for religious believers. Therefore, it is also known as the “Holy Mountain”, is the heart of many devout pilgrimages. The scenery here is very nice, and it is very comfortable to study religion here. Although there is very little communication with the outside world, the people living here never feel bored, nor do they feel that they live in poverty. Because here they can be alone with God, which is not possible in other parts of the world, the monks cherish their present life very much.
It is hard to imagine the monks who have lived here since childhood and have never met a member of the opposite sex in their entire lives. However, it is not unknown for women to land on the island after it was taken over by monks, and women disguised as men have entered the island in the past. In order to prevent this from happening again, people who want to enter the park have to go through strict checks to make sure they are male. However, because the island is so curious, many women try to sneak in, but if these women are found out, they are severely punished, usually by whipping (six to sixteen warnings).
But with the rise of the feminist movement, the island’s rules have angered many women, who see them as unequal, sexist and evil that needs to be repealed. Many women have also aggressively fought for access to the island, but with little success, and until now it has remained a male-dominated place. In fact, the island, which has upheld the ban for hundreds of years, has developed a unique custom that people need to tolerate and accept. Women are fighting for equal status and treatment with men, and it is better not to interfere too much with the rules of this religion.
Although there is no colorful life here, the people living here have never envied the outside world, nor have they yearned for the outside world. For, in their minds, this is paradise, the last pure land God has given people. The day this place becomes unrestrained and becomes a place where everyone can come and go at will, it will lose its sacred meaning.
