Because people’s life begins to become rich, people’s yearning for the outside world is gradually strengthened, many people feel that their life should be more wonderful, so many people choose to travel to faraway places. However, some people are no longer satisfied with traveling at home. They want to travel abroad and experience the wonders there. For those who choose to travel abroad, Nepal, with its strong religious atmosphere, is a priority for those seeking inner peace. Although it is not so developed, the city is not bustling, but it is very quiet, let people have a very peaceful feeling, can forget a lot of worries.
After arriving here, people will find that there is a special group of living goddesses, who are not adults but a group of girls who have not yet visited their first period. Local people believe the girls are the reincarnated gods who are protecting the country. With them, bad luck will not befall here, and people can live a happy life.
These girls are of high status and respected, and all they have to do every day is to be worshiped. However, this treatment does not last long, when they menstruate, they have to “retire”, then a new living goddess will take over her “work”. After leaving office, these girls are not sought after, but discriminated against. Because many people believe that these girls have saved people from many disasters, so they will bring some bad luck. If they marry them, they will bring bad luck to their families, so they usually end up alone. And that’s not the worst of it. They were young when they left the temple, but they didn’t have any ability to survive and had to be supported by their parents.
Many people may think this is ridiculous, after all, these girls are not young, how can not work to support themselves? In fact, these girls were chosen from a very young age to be worshipped in the temple, and during this period of time when she became a living goddess, she hardly communicated with people or walked around the ground. In other words, they don’t get any instruction at the time when they need it most, which leaves them with no life skills and no idea how to do many simple jobs.
And long time “pamper” let these girls do not know the cruelty of society, also do not know their future will be so miserable. Some people may ask, won’t the temple give them some “compensation”? In fact, when they leave, the temple gives them a sum of money and the red dresses they wear when they are living goddesses, but this money is not enough for them to live on for the rest of their lives. After they leave office, they have to rely on their parents and ultimately on themselves.
The “retirement” of these living goddesses is so miserable, why don’t people in this country stop this practice? In fact, it is because there is a legend here that there once was a true goddess who has blessed the country. She had one rule, however, that mortals could not look at her features, or she would leave. For a long time no one broke this taboo, until a king thought he was the ruler of the country and was special, so he ignored the taboo and had to see the goddess’s face, so the goddess left the country, and the people suffered frequent disasters. But the goddess did not abandon the country completely, and legend has it that she possessed girls who lived by the river.
And if they worshipped the girls, they would continue to have their protection, so every once in a while they would find a girl who had no scars and lived by the river, and they would sacrifice her to the temple. The practice has survived to this day, and in highly religious Nepal, the significance of a living goddess is so unusual that it is almost impossible to abolish the system.
These girls chosen by “God” are not as lucky as people imagine, even can say that they are miserable, because these girls are in a dark future, after leaving office waiting for them only to die alone, suffering discrimination. Such groups have not received enough attention, so generations of living goddesses have died in this tragic way. Perhaps if people here paid more attention to the lives of these “retired” living goddesses, they would be given a new lease of life and their lot would be improved, but it is also sad that people are not paying attention to this group.
Perhaps in the future, after people here receive more advanced cultural knowledge, they will no longer discriminate against those who used to be living goddesses, and only then can the situation of this group be improved and not be so miserable as now.
